Earthmoving Fundamentals

Objective

This five-day course will introduce the basic concepts and procedures of heavy equipment used to perform earthmoving work.  We will identify some of the common types of equipment utilized for differing types of applications, terrain and the operating techniques for efficient operation at the worksite. 

Competency Statement

Evidence of achieving the learning outcomes is attained by practical assessment. Attainment of the student’s performance at a hands-on level is achieved using practical activities. The practical outcome is at a foundation level. The assessment will be by direct observation of task.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Identify the types of machinery used on earthmoving projects.
  2. Perform a walk around safety check of earthmoving equipment.
  3. Locate the daily maintenance information of specific equipment.
  4. Define what an excavation is.
  5. Describe what must be done before any earthmoving activity is performed.
  6. Understand OSHA’s subpart P standard.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of typical grade stakes used on earthmoving projects.
  8. Demonstrate end of day procedures of earthmoving equipment.
