Mechanics TrainingHydraulic Fundamentals

This course will give the student a strong foundation in hydraulic systems used in mobile equipment.  Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the principles of hydraulics.
  • Identify and describe the function of the components that make up a typical hydraulic system.
  • Identify and read the schematic symbols in a typical hydraulic schematic.
  • Understand the use and operation of load sensing variable displacement pumps.

The learning environment will be established in both the classroom and the service shop.

Hydraulic System Fundamentals

This module is designed for the heavy-duty mechanic or technician who requires an understanding of hydraulic systems used on today's modern machinery. Training will include hydraulic concepts, types of hydraulic fluid, filters and fittings, hydraulic pumps and valves, hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic schematic interpretation. The reinforcement of the lessons will be solidified with lab sessions incorporating the equipment along with training aids.

Lesson Plan Objectives:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of hydraulic flow, pressure, and resistance to flow
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of fluid cleanliness
  • Demonstrate an understanding of fitting and hose identification
  • Demonstrate an understanding of hydraulic pump operation
  • Demonstrate an understanding of hydraulic flow, pressure, and directional valves
  • Demonstrate an understanding of actuator repair
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic hydraulic system ISO symbols
